Starting in Saidonis

As Markus gazed in awe at the town around him, he couldn't help but feel a little anxious. His move from Sinnoh to Saidonis was both exciting and worrying at the same time. I really hope I wasn't mistaken in coming here, he thought worriedly. It wasn't the first time he'd had the thought since arriving, and with some mental effort he shoved it to the back of his mind. In an effort to calm his nerves he focused on the immutable, sunny weather, then on his companion. The shaggy-haired boy looked to his smiling partner, Chillwood the Snover. The tree-like Pokemon had been more than happy to accompany him on his search for rare and unique objects.

As the duo approached their destination, the young man couldn't help fidgeting slightly with his hands, quickly resorting to sticking them in his pockets. Chillwood looked at him curiously, tilting the upper part of his body slightly to denote a look of inquiry. Markus smiled nervously as he noticed his partner's movement. "I'm just a little anxious about meeting Professor Hawthorne. Making a bad first impression would be unwise. And being late would be even worse, which is why I insisted we leave so early." Chillwood seemed to be annoyed at that, causing Markus to laugh. "Sorry buddy, I know it was much earlier than we would typically wake up," he apologized. They both returned their focus to their destination dead ahead.

As they approached the building Markus took several deep breaths to calm his nerves, pulling his hands out of his pockets and straightening them out. After a few breaths he was ready to at least feign a casual demeanor. The young man knocked on the door, awaiting a response. As he prepared to knock again the door opened, leaving his hand mid-air. Inside was a young man, somewhat short with light hair.

He smiled apologetically, giving Markus time to put his hand down. "I deeply apologize for the wait! Are you, erm... Markus Hedrick," he inquired.

"That would be me, yes," he answered in feigned casualness. In truth, he had been getting worried he had mixed up the time he was intended to arrive.

"Alright, great! Professor Hawthorne isn't in right now, but I have your starter kit! Here are some Poke Balls, a Poke Dex, and... I guess you don't need a starter," he says, smiling at the Frosted Tree Pokemon. "You're not from around here, are you," he asks Markus, turning to face the trainer again.

Slightly taken aback by the question Markus lost his mental footing. After taking a brief second to get it back he responded, "No, I'm from Sinnoh. How'd you know?"

With a wink he nodded to Chillwood. "Snovers don't live around Northern Saidonis. You have a good one, good luck on your journey." And with that the door was closed, leaving Markus and Chillwood on the front steps of the lab. Chillwood laughed as they went back onto the main road, gaining a look of annoyance from Markus.

"What? So he took me by surprise slightly. I wasn't expecting someone so... Laid back." Markus sighed, smiling as another thought entered his head. "It wasn't Professor Hawthorne, which means I couldn't have left a bad first impression. At least, not on her. Possibly on the other dude." The young man smiled slightly at Chillwood before they both gazed forward. "And now we can go... Wherever, I suppose." While he seemed slightly unsure, he kept on walking straight through the town, his Pokemon beside him as they truly started on their journey in Saidonis.
